CRS Responds to New Hosptial Construction Site

 

On January 19, 2010 at 0958hrs main station crews were alerted for a fall pt from the 5th floor of the new hospital site. 
 
Deputy Chief Sprecher, Captain Mackrell, Assistant Chief Hays and Paramedic 755 arrived on location. Crews were met by frantic, demanding construction crews trying to assist thier co-worker. Deputy Chief Sprecher and Assistant Chief Hays immediately reported to the pt and initiated pt care at approximately 1006hrs. Captain Mackrell remained with the duty vehicle and assumed Robinwood command. Deputy Chief Sprecher reported a Priority 1 Category A trauma confirming the dispatched information. P755 arrived on location consisting of Lt Jen Crippen, Paramedic Keli Dofflemyer, EMT-B Daniel Young and EMT-B Student Steve Reid. P755 initially staged on the hard surface due to excessive amounts of mud and limited access to the pt location. Squad 10 and construction staff worked to cut through a cable so the ambulance could access the pt through a paved parking lot. 
 
The pt was reported as conscious at ems arrival, however very rapidly deteriorated to respiratory arrest. Crews from CRS, Co 10 and construction staff worked quickly and efficiently to treat and package the pt. to the stokes basket. Crews worked in a very stressful environment to include upset/frantic construction workers, shin high mud and very cool temperatures. The pt was carried by crews from the fall site to the waiting medic unit. The medic unit was enroute to the hospital at 1016hrs. Overall scene time was 10 minutes. Lt Jen Crippen, Paramedic Keli Dofflemyer, Assistant Chief Hays, Captain Mackrell, EMT-B Daniel Young and EMT-B Student Steve Reid worked to treat the pts multi-system trauma. The pt was in full arrest for a short duration, however, crews were able to restore a palpable pulse by arrival to the trauma center. The pt. succumed to his injuries later at the trauma center, suffering from multi-system trauma. Overall, crews arrived on scene at 1006hrs and had arrived at the trauma center by 1022hrs.
